An Eagle Scout’s Call to Action

Written by Mike Flynn, President - Milwaukee Region

One of the most satisfying aspects of my work as President of our Milwaukee Region is meeting inspiring people who are driven to achieve. Whether they’re working diligently on their business goals, tirelessly delivering nonprofit resources, or motivated to make the world better, connections with these people are encouraging and energizing.

Since 1912 when the Eagle Scout award was created, only about 2% of eligible scouts have earned the award. And I’m the first to admit that I’m a biased father – I’m very proud that my two oldest sons both achieved this great honor.

Beyond parental pride, did you know that each Eagle Scout contributes an average of more than 150 hours of volunteer time for his Eagle Scout service project? To earn the Eagle Scout award, a Boy Scout must fulfill requirements in leadership, service, and outdoor skills. It takes several years to achieve.

The young man I met, Noé Shinners, is using his Eagle Scout service project to help children who are coping with cancer.

You can read more about Noé’s Eagle Scout project in his letter. As a parent of six children myself, I can’t think of something more difficult or emotional than one of your children fighting cancer. Over the last five years or so, I have witnessed from a distance the son of a dear friend, Brannon Moran, age 12, win this battle.  Brannon is one of the survivors; each year more than 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer in the United States.

Noé and his father John recently visited First Business Bank in Brookfield to enlist our help in his project to donate new toys for children who are admitted to the hospital with cancer. The collection bin is in our lobby at 18500 W Corporate Drive, Brookfield WI 53045. Our office hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm — let’s show Noé we care about these kids and fill the First Business Bank collection bin to the brim. If you’d like to donate funds online to this cause, we’re collecting those for him here. Please make sure to choose the “Eagle Scout” option from the drop-down selection. Thank you so much for your support.
