As an ambitious business owner on a determined path to reach your goals, you need financial experts who truly understand the barriers and high stakes to success. At First Business, we don’t just talk the talk. Our company’s entrepreneurial roots drive our daily interactions and strategies. Founded in 1990 by Jerry Smith, First Business was the first business-focused bank in the Midwest, started in Madison, Wisconsin, with 167 investors, just a handful of employees, and more ambition than one could harness.
In 1995, First Business added asset-based lending services, and two years later began providing equipment finance and leasing services. In 1999, we added trust and investment services, and in 2000 expanded to the Milwaukee area. In 2005, First Business went public on the NASDAQ exchange as FBIZ. As a publicly traded company, we continued to grow, and in 2006 added locations in Northeast Wisconsin. In 2012, the firm successfully completed a $29 million equity raise and began offering accounts receivable financing services nationwide. In 2014, First Business successfully purchased the holding company of Alterra Bank in the Kansas City Metro.
Since that very first day, we’ve been determined to help our clients succeed with a rare level of attention to client service. This not only differentiates our people, but it also shows our commitment to integrity and to our greater communities. We like the Latin expression “acta non verba” — through “deeds not words,” we focus our client-centered solutions on the whole health of your business and personal wealth.
