When Austin Thompson was growing up in a small town outside of Kansas City, his first job was as a cart attendant at a local golf course. With a father in agricultural banking, Austin was used to hearing that he’d grow up to be a banker just like his dad.
“When I went to college, I took one semester of physical therapy classes to prove everyone wrong,” he says. “I ate my humble pie in my second semester and changed my major to business administration with an emphasis in finance and banking. I took the family trait and ran with it.”
After college, he was drawn to the big city, so he worked at a commercial bank in Kansas City. His transition to First Business Bank was a seamless merger of a desire to bring attentive, small-town service to clients along with strong lending capacity. “I really like that First Business feels like a community bank, but can give you a $10 million loan if you need one. You have a personal relationship with an expert who’s not a robot. I feel like we’re very successful with that.”
