Five Tips for Juggling Work and Motherhood

I’m a mom of three boys ages 3, 5, and 7 and a full-time Banker at First Business Bank. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times people have said “Oh, you’re so busy!” or asked “How do you do it all with such young kids?”

So how do I manage day after day to be an AWESOME mom of three young boys and be a successful banker with this busy life-style? I know I’m not the only one who battles this daily challenge, so I wanted to take a moment to share five tips that help me balance it all:

1. Technology Is Your Friend

I used to have a million post-it notes at home, at work…basically everywhere I went. Now I’ve realized there’s this great thing that lets me keep everything in one place…my smart phone. Being able to see my home calendar and work calendar all in one spot…and actively managing that calendar…has been a life saver…and a time saver.

2. Collaboration is Key

I often describe my life as “organized chaos”. Without the help of my husband at home, and our team at work, I simply couldn’t make it through the day. No one can do everything on their own, so having a great team and support system goes a long way.

colored3. It’s OK to Say NO

It’s OK to say NO! There are so many things that I would like to do, but just don’t have time. I think all of us struggle with that to a certain extent. I’ve learned that it’s OK (and entirely necessary) to say NO to help me keep my sanity and to stay on schedule.

4. Know Your Non-negotiables

Because there are so many hours throughout the day where I’m not with my children, I’ve created several non-negotiables for the time I do have with them. I wake up with my kids every day. I put them to bed every night. And I make it to as many of their school and sports functions that I can. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve missed bedtime in the last year.

5. Appreciate the Small Moments

As I get my kids ready for the day, sometimes we might have a dance party to Mickey Mouse. And every night we sit around the dinner table as a family so we can each share our stories about the day. These small moments make it all worth it.

These are just a few things I do to manage all of the responsibilities that come with being a Mommy and a Manager.
