Charity: The Importance of Giving Back
Written by LeAnn Fordyce, Client Services Associate
“We make a living not by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill
This insightful quote resonates with me because charity is not what you do for recognition – it’s about how you better the lives of people around you. Volunteering doesn’t come with an instruction manual; it comes in all shapes and sizes, but still provides us with valuable experiences that we cherish forever.
I am fortunate to work for a company that is dedicated to giving back to our community. About a year ago, I joined our office’s internal Charitable Committee, and it has been rewarding to give back to those who need it most. The Charitable Committee meets monthly to consider sponsoring local nonprofit events, organizing drives, and supporting causes in other ways. My involvement on the committee and with individual causes has made me realize how much I take for granted on a daily basis. The idea of not having running water or reliable electricity is a completely foreign concept to some of us. Many of us have been fortunate enough to not worry about where our next meal is coming from, where we are going to sleep at night, or having the essentials to survive.
I think it is important to give back to those in need, not only because you are making someone else’s life a little bit easier, but because you are positively impacting them and making a change. There are many amazing non-profit organizations in the Kansas City region that advocate for a wide range of causes – from homeless veterans to adoptable pets. People throughout the metro work tirelessly to ensure that others have meals and a support system in times of need.
I’m very thankful to work for a company that values giving back to our communities. First Business now offers its employees a paid volunteer day off and I used this day to help out at the Hope Faith Assistance Campus in downtown Kansas City. This organization is a homeless shelter that provides care for men, women, and children. Upon my arrival, I took a tour through the building to see all they had to offer. They provide not only warm showers and shelter, but they also provide free healthcare, education to those who want to further their knowledge, and jobs. When I left that day, I was truly humbled and thankful to have a running car, clean clothes in my closet, and a pantry full of food. My heart was heavy to know that there are people out there that struggle every day just to LIVE and this made my “problems” seem so incredibly small. This experience created a fire inside me and gave me a new outlook on my life and my attitude.
Through community volunteering and my work on our Charitable Committee, I feel fortunate to gain perspective on my life and appreciation for all of the people and organizations serving our communities. I am glad that First Business supports charitable causes; giving back is a natural part of who we are as a company. If you would like to get involved in your community or have great ideas to share, we would love to hear about it.
